Sports Massage Therapy
What is Sports Massage?
Sports Massage is a bit of a misleading term in reality, as it suggests that only sports people, or those with sports related injuries will benefit from the treatment.
In fact, Sports massage can be used to relieve, or even prevent, the aches and pains caused by the hustle and bustle of day to day living for almost anyone. Most people will suffer from time to time with muscular pain, whether it is a backache, or neck pain. These problems can be the result of a specific, traumatic injury such as whiplash or a fall, or from RSI (repetitive strain injury) from work related problems. Most muscular pain, however, is the result of postural issues that might date back to childhood, or may have developed over time due to lifestyle issues.
Sports massage techniques involve manipulation of the soft tissues of the body in order to restore function and range of motion to injured or tight muscles. It also increases blood flow to the muscles, which improves the delivery of essential nutrients and oxygen. An increase in lymphatic flow also helps with the removal of toxins, such as Lactic Acid, and can help reduce discomfort, swelling and pain.
The Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage
Breaking Down Scar Tissue - Untreated scar tissue is the major cause of re-injury, usually months after you thought that injury had fully healed.
Reduce Mucsle Tension - Soft tissue release techniques can release tension in specific areas of a muscle.
Increase flexibility and Range of Motion - Deep friction and Muscle compressions can remove muscle fibre adhesions, increasing the flexibility in the muscle and creating a greater range of motion at the joint.
Improved muscle recovery time - Sports massage induces a pumping action within the muscle, which increases the flow of blood. This improves both the supply of nutrients and the removal of toxins from the injured tissue.
Targeted treatment for specific muscle injuries - Sports massage can be used in the treatment of many specific injuries, including; Achilles Tendonosis, Plantar Fasciitis, Shin Splints, Tennis Elbow, Runners Knee, etc. It can also help in the repair of any muscle strains or joint sprains.
